ODIDIVA Adventures in JOZI and Le MIX ROOM

"Its been a long time I shouldn't have left you, without a dope beat to step to, step to step to (what?)step to step to (freaky-freaky)step to step to...."

If I have to give you the origin of this quote, I might as well step out of my stripper shoes, take my rings off and give you a Diva Ass Whippin'.
The quote does send me back to 2001 when it seemed that we were destined to listen to the stolen sounds, dance moves and booty shakes of, of Britney Spears instead of the sublime and divine Aaliyah.
It was the year that Missy Elliot dropped her most memorable track and sang the praises of Ecstasy.
5 days before I travelled to London for the first time, to perform at The Barbican Theatre, home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Aaliyah died and in homage I went out and bought her last album. But so phat were the beat and rhythms of "Get Your Freak On", catchy was the lyric that I couldn't resist getting Miss E So Addictive...as well.

Fast forward 9 years and on the eve of the FIFA WORLD CUP 2010 in South Africa. A week before, HOUSE OF THE HOLY AFRO starring ODIDIVA for the first time on home soil for a 4 week season at The Market Theatre, I bought another definitive album, FLESHTONE by Kelis.
If you don't know this forward thinking, Avant Garde Genre Busting Artist, Kelis, has gone completely Electro House crazy, in the very best way.
Listen to the first single ACAPELLA or even watch the Music Video and understand that to standout in a crowd is ALWAYS better!
No mainstream artist has the guts to do what she has done, which is produce eclectic futuristic albums that have sounded like nothing like their predecessor and nothing like her so called peers.

HOUSE OF THE HOLY AFRO has toured over 15 towns and cities in Europe and Australasia since its debut in 2004. HOUSE OF THE HOLY AFRO has received nothing but critical and popular acclaim wherever it has performed from the 10 Years of South African Democracy in Berne; Switzerland, The Vienna LIFE BALL 2005 with Heidi Klum, Elton John, Versace, Liza Minelli and Dita Von Teese, The Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006, The Harare International Arts Festival (HIFA) 2007 to The Zurich Theater Spektakel 2008 where they built us a custom made night club in 48hours,The European Union Cultural Capital 2009 Linz Austria Festival, The London Rich Mix Theatre in the fashionable hub of Shoreditch to The FIFA World Cup 2010 and now Copenhagen, Denmark at Republique 3 - 11 September 2010, where shows are already selling out.
I dare say we had our most interesting audiences in Jozi City. Many were speechless and dumbfounded, before ODIDIVA told them to, "Shake Ya Booty, Come On!" Then they danced like Africans can, the Mexicans went superLOCO, while the Euros thought this was the Africa they have been wanting to see. My acapella homage to Brenda Fassie was drowned out by the audience singing, "Memeza Mama, Memeza Mama!" way before the chorus was supposed to begin. It brought a tear to my eyes every time. Even David Tlale, Marianne Fassler, Suthukazi, Gloria Bosman and even Steve Hofmeyer made a turn.
But the Mail & Guardian Review: ODIDIVA CLIMBS THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, took my breath away!

As I always do after most tours, I stayed behind in Johannesburg. What I didn't count on was the warm sunny days, the get up and go mentality I would be instilled with and the nauseatingly long drives to everything.
If the theme song for New York is Frank Sinatra's evergreen rendition of "New York - New York" or the fashionable "Empire State of Mind" by Jay Z and Alicia Keys then I have to say that Jozi's theme song is the Traditional African Gospel Chorus, "JERUSALEMA" by the cast of HOUSE OF THE HOLY AFRO with beats by DJ DINO MORAN. The theme movie is South Africa's own Scarface, the S.A. Box Office hit JERUSALEMA.

Yes, this is the New York of Africa an nothing underlined that more than the highlight of the FIFA WORLD CUP 2010 SOUTH AFRICA. Even the Boks are stopping in Soweto at the National Stadium, Soccer City, The FNB Stadium.
Big Brother Africa, MTV BASE, CHANNEL O, TRACE are all broadcast from eMzansi eJozi.
Cape Town is the L.A./San Francisco and Durban/eThekwini the Miami Vice to Joburg's N.Y.C. Even the African Union Parliament meets in Midrand.

I do have to say that at times this city feels like a great big set of linking suburbs instead of an urban centre of serious skyscrapers and population density. Which is why I have always said if I am to live in Jozi, I would want to live amongst the tall buildings that blot out the sun, the garish Ponti Tower and the iconic Telkom Johannesburg Tower.
Performing in Newtown at the Market Theatre allowed me to dream. Newtown is being revived into the new sexy cultural centre of Johannesburg. With Braamfontein being reignited with Club Inc., the new penthouse superluxe LOUNGE around the corner and the advent of Le Mix Room in Newtown Mall across the prestigious Nelson Mandela Bridge, a couple of blocks from the acclaimed Market Theatre, the dream is set to become a reality.

The venue is Le Mix Room nightclub, Harrison St., Newtown, Johannesburg.

The venue is amazing with a main dancefloor (capacity 550) featuring live broadcast screens, a bar running the length of the dancefloor, state of the art intelligent lighting imported from France and a comfortable lounge area. The club's rooftop area (capacity 400) boasts a fully equipped DJ box, terraced lounge area with a fully functional and equipped braai area and bar and 360degree views of the city centre.
