Running in heels...ODIDIVA's Drag Race Competition

ODIDIVA’S DRAG RACE
Cape Town’s Drag Talent Search Competition
@ Rosie’s - cnr. Chiappini & Waterkant Street, De Waterkant Village, Green Point

12 October – 19 December 2009-10-08

ODIDIVA is Cape Town’s leading, live singing, drag performer. Presented by accomplished performing artist, Odidi Mfenyana (Interrogation Room SABC 1, Lonely Planet 6degrees: Cape Town, Spier Poetry Exchange 2008, Stokvel SABC 2, Human Cargo CBC/Mnet, Charlie Jade CBC/SABC 3, BIG DADA – European & S.A. Tour), Odidiva is a persona of exuberant energy, bringing a sense of authenticity and theatre to the drag genre, where the focus is on talent and performance, rather than impersonation and mimicry.

After five years as the lead character and performer in House of the Holy Afro (Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide; Australia, Berlin; Germany, Zurich, Berne; Switzerland, Vienna, Linz; Austria, London; UK) with top international local DJ Dino Moran, produced by Brett Bailey and his Third World Bunfight Theare Co., ODIDIVA has been back at her residency at the intimate, vibrant ROSIE’S Bar Lounge.

It has been rumoured that Cape Town has no vibrant Drag Performers like the great Gay Captals of Sydney, Berlin, New York and London. So after her second tour to Sydney, Australia in so many years, ODIDIVA has decided to bring back the Drag culture of the infamous Imperial Hotel, Oxford St., Sydney, the city’s unofficial HQ of Drag.
ODIDIVA is confident that Cape Town has many aspiring and inspiring Drag Queens looking to dance, lip synch and sing their way to fame and fabulosity. As a Diva with her own platform, courtesy of Russell Shapiro; proprietor of On Broadway, Café Manhattan and Rosie’s and owner and producer of 3 Tons of Fun, ODIDIVA is creating a talent search competition looking to uncover the city’s young drag talent.

Every Monday 17h30 entrants shall be auditioned. Only 2 shall be chosen per week to compete, the following week, on the stage in front of an audience, ODIDIVA and a special guest judge. Entrants shall get points from an SMS hotline, live audience applause, ODIDIVA and the special guest judge.
The winner moves on to the semi-finals. The semi-finals shall have 10 competitor’s (incl. 2 best runners-up). The semi-finals will take place over two Mondays with exactly the same judging system as before.
Only 8 finalists shall be chosen for the Gala Finals to take place (at a venue yet to be confirmed), on the eve of the Rainbow Festival (16 – 20 December 2009). At the Gala Finals only 4 Drag performers shall be chosen to be new ROSIE’S DRAG DIVAS troupe.
As part of their prizes the winners will have their debut performance at The Annual Mother City Queer Project (MCQP) 2009 Tool Box Project, Saturday 19 December, at the Old Biscuit Mill along with ODIDIVA.

We are looking for prize sponsors, marketing partners, media partners, logistical partners (sms hotline, venues, sound/lighting/staging), costume sponsors and partners to help make this contest a resounding success, and a new avenue for creativity, expression and business in Cape Town.
